Many women who experience abnormal vaginal discharge believe that they are suffering from thrush. However, bacterial vaginosis (BV) is actually the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age.2
The causes of thrush and BV are distinct and therefore different treatments are required for each. Identification of the correct condition is key to helping achieve treatment success.
Here's what to look out for:
Symptoms of thrush3-5
Sore and itchy vagina / vulva Vulval soreness and irritation Slight inflammation of labia 'Cottage cheese-like', white vaginal discharge
Symptoms of BV6-7
Fishy or unpleasant odour, particularly after sex Watery discharge Greyish white looking discharge
