You can help your patients manage their cough symptoms1
With the complications of COVID-19 this year it is more important than ever to understand your patients' symptoms and provide support. Here are some simple steps to help guide your recommendations.
Is your cough tickly?
Do you find you are coughing up phlegm?
Do you have any other troublesome symptoms?
Dry or non-productive cough – common signs include lack of phlegm, patients may describe as tickly1
Chesty or productive cough – characterised by production of sputum1
For a dry cough – recommend suppressants that inhibit coughing such as dextromethorphan or pholcodine
For a chesty cough – recommend expectorants to facilitate coughing e.g., guaifenesin, ipecacuanha
It is important to achieve the right concentration of the active ingredient in cough medicine in the bloodstream for the most effective reduction in symptoms of a cough.2 Follow the pack instructions to outline the optimum dose.
