| | | | WHAT is the point of pharmacists? If there was no such thing as community pharmacy, would someone see the need to invent it today? More importantly, how do community pharmacists themselves see their role, now and in 5-10 years' time? |
The environment in which pharmacists operate is changing rapidly, driven by advances in drug therapy, changes in population health, and constantly evolving health policy and commissioning structures. The only thing that is certain is that future community pharmacy practice will be very different to that of today. |
So where does pharmacy fit in a future vision of primary healthcare delivery? Does community pharmacy, as we know it now, even have a future at all? |
To debate these issues, Pharmacy Magazine and P3pharmacy have gathered together a group of leading-edge community pharmacy practitioners. We are going to ask them to tell us how they see the future of community pharmacy and which of the following factors are key to realising that ambition: - Providing personalised healthcare through expert clinical interactions
- Acting as a central point for information and evidence in support of medicines use
- Developing a workable model of pharmaceutical care
- Reducing demand elsewhere in primary and secondary care
- Assuming the predominant role in medicines optimisation and prescribing
- Enabling people to live longer, healthier lives through targeted population health interventions
- Advocating an achievable self-care culture for patients and consumers
- Working in close collaboration with other health providers and commissioners to meet local care priorities.
