4 Mobile Apps For Healing And Mindfulness
I have a confession to make.  I'm addicted to my iPhone.  It's a modern day vice, I know.  There could be worse vices, right?  That's what I tell my wife anyway.  That being said I'm amazed at the new ways smartphones and mobile apps have been used to make our lives better, including our health.  For someone dealing with chronic illness, like me, there are now mobile ...
In living a life with chronic health challenges, it's essential to get good medical care. However, I've found that medicine doesn't have any cures for my three autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiency, severe malabsorption syndrome, and other conditions. Once I finally realized that there were no cures and that no cures were likely to come in my lifetime I began to look around to find what I ...
A few months ago I wrote about a very personal experience where I found peace and healing from pain in the beauty of Nature's surroundings.  I believe that we all can be more aware each day of sources of healing around us.  This kind of awareness and gratitude can awaken your senses, lift your spirit, and help you break free of the physical bonds of chronic illness.  It can also help you see ...
We all go through many stages when we are first diagnosed with a chronic illness. My diagnosis was Rheumatoid Arthritis. To some a diagnosis may be a relief after months and years of not knowing what's wrong with your health.  For others it may come as a shock. Getting through the emotions that follow and the physical limitations of chronic illness can put pressure on your relationships. I ...
To most people getting fit with chronic illness sounds like an oxymoron.  The old me thought that people that were chronically ill simply did not exercise, ever!  But experience has taught me that exercise is key to healing well with chronic illness.   I'm not talking about the 6 pack abs, rock hard body kind of fitness you see on infomercials on late night TV.   No, I'm referring to the kind of ...
I dread the arrival of Spring every year.  Actually, I dread the change of seasons altogether.  Partly because they often mean flareups of my chronic illness symptoms.  But mostly I hate seasonal changes because some kind of house or yard work follows.  The green beauty of Spring and Summer means there is a lot to be done, including mowing, trimming, weeding, planting, and putting down lots of ...

Don't Give Up

Sometimes the challenges we face coping with chronic illness can be downright overwhelming.  We all experience those moments of weakness where we give way to the groundswell of emotions arising from our illness or other forms of adversity.  It can be so difficult to stay focused on hope, mindfulness and healing well.  One of my Twitter friends posted recently: "The enemy is not pain. The enemy is despair."  That is so true.  But there is hope.  So this is for my friends who may feel like giving up.....

Recognize Sources of Healing Around You

About a month ago I saw my doctor for a followup visit.  I had just gone through another round of specialized tests for my autoimmune arthritis which had been escalating in intensity over the Winter.  The results were inconclusive.  No clear patterns.  No diagnosis.  No ready treatments.  No answers.   The only proof I had was the unrelenting pain that pervaded my body's tired and achy joints and muscles and the endless, draining fatigue.

9 Ways Mindfulness Helped Me Heal With Chronic Illness

Mindfulness was not a term I was familiar with when I was diagnosed with chronic illness 17 years ago.  Looking back, I wish I had known more about how to practice it in my life.  It would have saved me a lot of worry, distress, and hopelessness.  I've since learned that mindfulness is a set of skills for healing, intuition, insight, calmness, focus, resilience, and hope that you can use to counter the inevitable adversity of chronic illness.

Guest Post: Just Live!

Last December I got the call that no one wants.  The biopsy came back positive for prostate cancer.  My world caved in. My brain shut down and my emotions ran to fear and depression.  That word cancer brings with it fear.  I couldn’t help but think of how my mother died of pancreatic cancer.  When you hear that word you feel your life collapse. Thoughts of pain and your own mortality try to shove their way into your brain.

3 Sacrifices I Refuse to Make with Chronic Illness

If you have a chronic illness, you know a little something about sacrifice.  Because of my chronic illness, I've learned to make a lot of sacrifices.  I used to love mountain biking.  But I had to give it up.  I just don't have the energy and the pain that follows can be excruciating.  That was a sacrifice that I had to accept.   But there are 3 sacrifices I refuse to make because of my chronic illness

8 Reasons to be Grateful for Chronic Illness

Who knew I would be grateful for having a chronic illness?  Actually I wish I never got sick in the first place, but given that I am, I'm glad it has changed my life in some good ways.  I've been reading responses in the forums to my recent post on gratitude

Guest Post: Sophie's Story with IBS

I’ve suffered from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for 20 years. One night when I was 12 I experienced a bout of food poisoning that was so severe I never really recovered. Whatever happened to my bowel that day transformed a perfectly normal digestive system into an instrument of torture.
